Public Notices and News Releases

NOVOVIRUS infections December 2012 - information from the Salida School District Nurse's Office.

Many of our students and staff have become sick with what is most likely Norovirus, a common stomach virus. The holiday break should help to clear this out of the schools and  community.

Here is some information on what Norovirus is and treatment:

Norovirus outbreaks can occur at any time of the year, but are more common in the winter and early spring. Noroviruses are highly concentrated in the stool and vomit of infected people. The virus has a low infectious dose and is transmitted from person to person easily.

Typical symptoms of Norovirus infection include vomiting and non-bloody diarrhea. Other potential symptoms include low-grade fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea, abdominal cramps, chills, and malaise. The average duration of symptoms is 24-72 hours. Dehydration is the most common complication, especially among the young and elderly, and, in some cases, may require intravenous fluids. People are most contagious from the moment they begin feeling ill until at least two days after recovery.

From the Superintendent's Office
Salida R-32-J Security Response to the National Tragedy in Newtown, CT

Community Members:
Yet again, our nation has experienced another great tragedy, this time in Connecticut.  The Salida School District, in collaboration with law enforcement and our Emergency Manager, are being very proactive due to this tragedy as we move forward with stricter security in all of our buildings.  We want to ensure, to our very best abilities, students, staff and visitors to our buildings are as safe as possible.  We know we are getting a new elementary school, yet that is a year-and-a-half ahead of us.  We simply can’t wait that long to ensure the current facility, and all of our buildings, are as secure as possible.
We have recently vastly improved the security systems with the new Salida High School.  We have applied the same security measures at the Salida Middle School.  Due to heightened national security at all public facilities, we are continuing to work to make our schools as safe as they can be.  We have been working with our Emergency Management Team for the past two years, holding several meetings and training sessions for our key staff members.  We routinely have lockdown and evacuation drills, and have monthly fire drills.  We know we constantly need more training and communication and we continue to plan for future training and drills.
The following measures will be in place, starting Monday, December 17, 2012:
• We will ensure all outside doors at Longfellow Elementary are secured each day.  Visitors to the building will have to be physically let in by Longfellow staff, through the main entry door only, as it will also be locked during school hours.
• We will have similar policies at Crest Academy, the Early Childhood Center, and the Kesner Building, where Horizons Exploratory Academy students and staff, along with District Administrative staff, are housed.
• School Counselors and additional counselors will be present at all buildings in case students or staff members need to talk about this situation.
• Extra law enforcement protection will also be in place throughout this week.
• These practices will continue until we can get better systems in place at these buildings.
• It is critical that our students and entire staff, including volunteers, along with the community, understand the importance of not chocking, blocking, or “rocking” doors open.  We will strictly enforce this.  It is also vital that all outside doors are locked during the school day.
We are not in a “panic mode"; we are carefully being proactive and taking all needed precautions to ensure that we are doing everything possible to keep our students, staff and all visitors to our buildings as safe as possible.
Darryl E. Webb
Superintendent, Salida School District R-32-J

Lunch Price Increase
10-17-2012

From Food Service Director Danny Quinto:  Every three years the CDE (Colo Dept of Education) does a weighted price analysis. During the process we go back three years and track the price we charge for lunch and the cost of the food that we use to feed our kids. This process assures us that we are keeping the price and cost in good standing with each other. From the standpoint of food cost at our schools the goal with every school in the nation is to not lose money and not make money. The goal is to break even. After a week of Excel spread sheets and working closely with the CDE we are going to come up short this year. To make up for the short fall we will need to raise the price of our school meal $.05. This nickel will insure that we are in compliance with the State of Colorado Department of Nutrition. If I can answer any questions please don’t hesitate to call 719-530-5433 or email me . I’ll try to answer any questions you have. The goal is to keep the positive energy moving in a forward direction. As I always say …Our kids are worth it!!!
